Amoxicillin + Bromhexine is an antibacterial and mucolytic combination.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It works by blocking the growth of bacteria. It does this by attaching to and inactivating proteins (penicillin-binding proteins) located within the bacteria's cell walls. This prevents the essential cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains that maintain the strength and rigidity of the bacterial cell wall, causing it to weaken and eventually rupture due to osmotic pressure.
Bromhexine is a mucolytic agent. It thins and loosens mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough out. It does this by directly breaking down mucopolysaccharides and by releasing lysosomal enzymes, which alter the structure of the mucus. As a result, mucus becomes less sticky and less viscous, making it easier for ciliary action and coughing to clear it. In addition, Bromhexine increases the frequency of cilia movement, enhancing mucus transport.
Together, these components effectively manage bacterial respiratory infections accompanied by excessive mucus production.
