Chlorthalidone

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE/DIURETICS

Uses of Chlorthalidone

  • Chlorthalidone is a diuretic/anti-hypertensive medicine used to manage hypertension either as a monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive medications.
  • It serves as adjunctive therapy for oedema associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and corticosteroid and estrogen therapy.
  • Additionally, Chlorthalidone has demonstrated efficacy in addressing oedema related to diverse manifestations of renal dysfunction, including nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure.

Side effects of Chlorthalidone

  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Hypotension

How Chlorthalidone works

  • Chlorthalidone is a prolonged-acting oral diuretic exhibiting antihypertensive properties. This medication induces diuresis, characterised by an increased excretion of sodium and chloride. The diuretic mechanisms of chlorthalidone align with those of benzothiadiazine (thiazide) diuretics, and their maximal effects are comparable. The primary site of action is believed to be the distal convoluted tubule in the nephron. Chlorthalidone's diuretic actions reduce extracellular fluid volume, plasma volume, cardiac output, total exchangeable sodium, glomerular filtration rate, and renal plasma flow.
