Dapsone

Uses of Dapsone

  • The primary use of Dapsone is for the management of skin conditions like dermatitis herpetiformis and leprosy (Hansen's disease), and it belongs to the class of sulfone antibacterial medicines.

  • Additionally, in certain cases where other treatments have not been effective, Dapsone may be prescribed for severe acne.

Side effects of Dapsone

  • Site dryness and pruritus (topical)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Headache

  • Stomach upset

How Dapsone works

  • Dapsone is an antibacterial medication of the sulfone class.

  • It functions by interfering with the growth of bacteria. This is accomplished by blocking the synthesis of folic acid, an essential component for bacteria to survive and multiply. By interrupting the production of folic acid, Dapsone prevents bacterial growth, helping to manage infections effectively.
