Dosage Forms Available

• Dapsone is available in the form of oral tablets.
• It is also used as a topical gel.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is meant for use in adults and potentially teens based on doctor's advice.

Contraindications

• This medicine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Dapsone or any component of the formulation.
• It is contraindicated in patients with severe anaemia.
• It is contraindicated in patients with severe G6PD deficiency.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Dapsone may interact with other antibiotics such as rifampicin, which can decrease Dapsone levels, and trimethoprim (like proloprim), which may increase the risk of adverse haematologic reactions.
• It may also interact with gout medications (like probenecid), which may increase Dapsone levels, and folic acid supplements (like levomefolate), as Dapsone can decrease folic acid levels.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Symptoms of an overdose of Dapsone include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and agitation. Please contact your doctor if you notice any overdose symptoms.
• If you miss a dose of Dapsone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• If experiencing nausea or headache, consider taking the medicine with food.
• If mild rashes occurs, monitor it to ensure it does not worsen; apply cool compresses if irritation occurs.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Dapsone does not generally affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, be mindful of how you feel while taking it as individual reactions can vary.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding should only be considered if clearly needed. Both neonatal haemolytic anaemia and jaundice have been associated with its use. Consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with mild to moderate G6PD deficiency should use this medicine with caution.
• Patients with a history of methemoglobinemia should avoid dapsone, as it can increase the risk of methemoglobin formation, leading to oxygen transport issues.
• Caution should also be exercised in patients with cardiac disease, pulmonary disease, liver impairment, or renal impairment.

• Ensure a balanced diet rich in folic acid due to Dapsone’s potential effect on folic acid levels; consider foods like leafy greens, oranges, and whole grains.
• It might be helpful to avoid excessive sunlight or use protective clothing and sunscreen, as some users could experience increased sensitivity to sunlight while taking this medicine.
• For those managing leprosy or dermatitis herpetiformis using Dapsone, stress management techniques such as yoga or meditation could be beneficial to overall well-being and disease management.
