Dasatinib

Uses of Dasatinib

  • Dasatinib is primarily used for the management of certain types of leukemia, such as Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and belongs to the group of tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

  • For adults, it is also indicated in cases of chronic, accelerated, or myeloid or lymphoid blast phase Ph+ CML with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy, including imatinib, as well as Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy.

Side effects of Dasatinib

  • Decreased blood cell counts

  • Fluid retention

  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting

  • Skin rash

  • Musculoskeletal pain

How Dasatinib works

  • Dasatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

  • It operates by hindering the function of multiple tyrosine kinases, enzymes that stimulate cancer cell growth. Its chief target is the abnormal BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase produced due to the Philadelphia chromosome abnormality. By obstructing these proteins, Dasatinib manages to slow or halt the growth and proliferation of leukaemia cells in the body.
