Degarelix

Uses of Degarelix

  • Degarelix is primarily used to manage advanced prostate cancer in men and belongs to the class of medicines known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonists.

  • It is also employed, sometimes in combination with radiotherapy, in the management of high-risk localised or locally advanced prostate cancer.

Side effects of Degarelix

  • Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)

  • Hot flashes

  • Weight gain

  • Fatigue

  • Elevation in liver enzymes

How Degarelix works

  • Degarelix is a type of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist.

  • It functions by attaching itself to the GnRH receptors within the pituitary gland blocking the release of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). By inhibiting LH's secretion, Degarelix rapidly reduces testosterone levels to very low amounts, effectively depriving prostate cancer cells of this growth-promoting hormone. Unlike other GnRH agonists, Degarelix does not cause an initial surge in testosterone levels. This makes it effective in quickly reducing the amount of testosterone in the body without causing a temporary increase before the reduction.
