Dosage Forms Available

  •  This medicine can be taken orally (lozenges and syrup).

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • It can be taken by adults and children above 12 years of age.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, in patients of bronchial asthma having asthmatic cough, persistent or chronic cough, as occurs with smoking, asthma or lung disease known as emphysema, productive cough, respiratory failure or are at risk of developing respiratory failure.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • Avoid taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (furazolidone, procarbazine, pargyline, moclobemide, selegiline, isoniazid or linezolid), medicines for irregular heart beat (quinidine), serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline), medicines for psychiatric or emotional conditions (haloperidol), medicines for pain and inflammation (celecoxib, parecoxib or valdecoxib), and medicines for eating disorders (sibutramine). These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of this medication.

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • Overdose of this medicine can cause nausea and vomiting, involuntary muscle contractions, agitation, confusion, state of drowsiness, disturbances in consciousness, involuntary and rapid eye movements, rapid heart beating, coordination disorders, psychosis with visual hallucinations, and hyperexcitability. Other symptoms in case of massive overdose of this medicine include coma, severe breathing problems, and convulsions. Contact your doctor or hospital straight away if you experience any of the above symptoms. These symptoms need to be managed as an emergency in a hospital setting. Therefore, strict adherence to the prescribed dose is essential.
  • If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, but if the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing regime.

Management of Side Effects

  • If you experience dizziness, leave the bed slowly, resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing up. Avoid doing any task that requires mental coordination till the side effects subside. If side effects worsen or persist, consult your doctor for a possible treatment plan adjustment.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness. It is not recommended to drive, operate machinery, or do other activities that require mental alertness or coordination after taking this medicine. 

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • This medicine is not recommended in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • Caution is advised in older adults and patients having moderate to severe liver disease.

Special Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendation

  • This medicine can enhance the sedative effects of alcohol, leading to increased drowsiness and impairment of cognitive function. It is advisable to limit or avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
  • This medicine should be taken with or after meals to improve absorption. 
  • Maintain good hydration by drinking water and clear fluids to soothe your throat.
  • Avoid foods or beverages that can irritate your throat, such as spicy or acidic items.
  • Consider using a humidifier in your room to keep the air moist, which can help ease throat discomfort.
  • Get plenty of rest to aid in your recovery, and avoid strenuous physical activities if you feel unwell.
