ANTIASTHMATIC

Uses of Doxofylline

  • Doxofylline is primarily used for the treatment of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Doxofylline is a xanthine derivative used as a bronchodilator.
  • It helps in managing chronic bronchitis by reducing airway inflammation and improving lung function.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing

How Doxofylline works

  • Doxofylline works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the airways and improving airflow to the lungs.
  • It inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase (PDE), which leads to an increase in cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels in the cells. Elevated cAMP levels cause relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, helping to open up the airways.
  • By relaxing the bronchial smooth muscles, Doxofylline helps to dilate the airways, making it easier for air to flow into the lungs.
  • This is beneficial in conditions where the airways are constricted, such as in asthma and COPD.
  • Doxofylline helps to alleviate symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing by improving airway patency and reducing airway inflammation.
