Eflornithine

Uses of Eflornithine

  • The primary use of Eflornithine is to manage unwanted facial hair growth in women and belongs to ornithine decarboxylase inhibitor medications.

  • It is also used to reduce the risk of relapse in adult and paediatric patients with high-risk neuroblastoma who have responded partially to prior therapy.

Side effects of Eflornithine

  • Skin redness

  • Irritation

  • Rash

  • Itching

  • Burning or stinging sensation on the skin

How Eflornithine works

  • Eflornithine is an ornithine decarboxylase inhibitor.

  • It works by inhibiting the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase, which is essential for cell division and growth. By blocking this enzyme, it disrupts the synthesis of polyamines needed for DNA and protein production, ultimately slowing down the growth of rapidly dividing cells, such as those in certain types of tumours. This mechanism helps in treating conditions associated with excessive cell proliferation.
