Escitalopram belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of medicines.
It works by keeping more serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps control mood, available between nerve cells. It does this by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, which helps improve feelings of depression and anxiety. It's designed to focus mainly on serotonin, making it effective with fewer effects on other brain chemicals.
