Age and Dose Restrictions

• Famciclovir is indicated for use in adults. It is not recommended for use in children or adolescents under the age of 18 years.

Contraindications

• Famciclovir is contraindicated in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity to it or any of its components. It should not be taken by patients who have shown allergic reactions to penciclovir cream in the past or have AIDS.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Famciclovir can interact with other antiviral medicines (e.g., penciclovir, acyclovir and renal tubular blocking agents (e.g., probenecid).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• If an overdose of Famciclovir is suspected, immediate medical help must be sought. Symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, or kidney issues.
• In case a dose of Famciclovir is missed, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule should be resumed.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water may help manage some common side effects such as headache and diarrhoea.
• Resting or lying down may help manage dizziness or fatigue caused by this medication.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Famciclovir may lead to dizziness or sleepiness. If these symptoms are experienced, driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Famciclovir during pregnancy or while breastfeeding should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using this medicine during these periods.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with renal impairment should exercise caution when taking Famciclovir, as dose adjustments are necessary based on creatinine clearance levels. Patients with liver disease or galactose intolerance (a genetic condition that affects the body's ability to process galactose) should inform the doctor before taking this medicine.
