Haloperidol

Uses of Haloperidol

  • Haloperidol is primarily used for managing mental health disorders like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and Tourette's syndrome. It belongs to the group of first-generation antipsychotic medications.

  • Occasionally, it is also used for managing severe behavioural problems in hyperactive children when other treatments have not shown satisfactory results.

Side effects of Haloperidol

  • Drowsiness

  • Difficulty in falling or staying asleep

  • Dry mouth and blurred vision

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Headache and restlessness

How Haloperidol works

  • Haloperidol is a first-generation antipsychotic medication.

  • It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain that affects thoughts, feelings and behaviour. By inhibiting the excess activity of dopamine in certain parts of the brain, Haloperidol can help to manage the symptoms of psychosis, such as hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking associated with conditions like schizophrenia.
