Levamisole

Uses of Levamisole

  • Levamisole is primarily used to manage parasitic worm infections and belongs to the class of anthelmintic medicines.
  • Although it was previously used for various autoimmune disorders and as an adjuvant therapy in certain cancers, these uses have been largely discontinued due to the risk of severe adverse effects.

Side effects of Levamisole

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Abdominal pain
  • Insomnia

How Levamisole works

  • Levamisole is an anthelmintic medication.
  • It acts mainly as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist, leading to an overstimulation of the worm's muscles. This results in sustained muscle contraction and eventual paralysis in these parasites.
  • The paralysis caused by Levamisole prevents the worms from maintaining their position in the host's body, which ultimately leads to their expulsion.
