Nebivolol

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE

Uses of Nebivolol

  • Nebivolol is used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • It inhibits elevated heart rate and regulates myocardial contractility. Additionally, it induces vasodilation in blood vessels, thereby aiding in the reduction of blood pressure.
  • It is also prescribed for the management of chronic heart failure in individuals aged 70 years or older, alongside other therapeutic interventions.

Side effects of Nebivolol

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swollen hands or feet
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • An unusual itching or tingling feeling

How Nebivolol works

Nebivolol functions as a β-adrenergic receptor blocking agent. In individuals with extensive metabolism (representing most of the population) and at doses equal to or less than 10 mg, nebivolol exhibits preferential selectivity for β1 receptors. In poor metabolisers and higher doses, nebivolol inhibits both β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors. Nebivolol does not possess intrinsic sympathomimetic or membrane-stabilizing activity at concentrations relevant to therapeutic effects. At clinically significant doses, Nebivolol does not display α1-adrenergic receptor blockade activity. Various metabolites, including glucuronides, contribute to the β-blocking activity.
