Nitazoxanide + Ofloxacin

Uses of Nitazoxanide + Ofloxacin

  • Nitazoxanide + Ofloxacin is primarily used for the management of diarrhoea caused by parasitic infections of the intestines, such as cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, and bacterial infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, skin, and soft tissue infections. This combination belongs to the group of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and antiprotozoal agents.

  • Depending on the infecting organisms and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns, this combination may also be used to manage a variety of other bacterial and parasitic infections.

Side effects of Nitazoxanide + Ofloxacin

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Headache

How Nitazoxanide + Ofloxacin works

  • Nitazoxanide, the first component, is an antiprotozoal agent. It interferes with the energy metabolism of parasites by inhibiting an enzyme called pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR). This leads to the death of the parasitic cells.

  • Ofloxacin, the second component, is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It kills bacteria by stopping their DNA from replicating. It does this by interfering with two enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and other vital processes.
