Parnaparin

Uses of Parnaparin

  • Parnaparin is primarily used to prevent and manage blood clots in various conditions. It belongs to the class of anticoagulant medicines known as low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs).

  • This medicine is also useful in preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, usually of the legs, especially after general and orthopedic surgeries. Furthermore, it helps in managing Pulmonary Embolism (PE), a serious condition that occurs when a clot travels to the lungs and blocks a pulmonary artery. Also, Parnaparin prevents blood clotting during procedures involving extracorporeal circulation, such as hemodialysis.

Side effects of Parnaparin

  • Increased risk of bleeding

  • Pain at the injection site

  • Redness and swelling at the injection site

  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or hives

  • Unusual bruising or purple discolouration of the skin

How Parnaparin works

  • Parnaparin is an anticoagulant, a specific type of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). It works by boosting the activity of a natural body substance called antithrombin III. This substance is an anticoagulant that helps to halt the clotting process. When Parnaparin binds to antithrombin III, it increases its ability to inactivate several blood clotting factors, primarily factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin). By stopping these clotting factors, Parnaparin efficiently manages the formation and growth of blood clots. This mechanism is crucial in preventing and managing conditions like Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism.

  • It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

  • Patients with a known hypersensitivity to Parnaparin or any of its components should avoid its use.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Parnaparin may interact with other anticoagulants (such as warfarin), antiplatelet agents (like aspirin and clopidogrel), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (like ibuprofen and diclofenac), and thrombolytics (such as alteplase).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • Overdosing on Parnaparin can lead to serious complications like excessive bleeding. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

  • If you miss a dose of Parnaparin, administer it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time of your next dose. In such a case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any symptoms, please consult your doctor.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • A healthy diet and lifestyle can support the overall well-being of individuals managing conditions for which Parnaparin is indicated.

  • Stay adequately hydrated, especially if you are prone to blood clots.

  • Avoid prolonged periods of immobility. Regular physical activity can help maintain good circulation, which is important in preventing blood clots.
