Risperidone

Uses of Risperidone

  • The primary use of Risperidone is in the management of psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and irritability related to autistic disorder. It belongs to the group of medications known as atypical antipsychotics.

  • It also finds off-label use in other conditions such as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and treatment-resistant depression.

Side effects of Risperidone

  • Tremors

  • Restlessness

  • Drowsiness

  • Increased appetite

  • Weight gain

How Risperidone works

  • Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic medication.

  • It works mainly by blocking or antagonising certain receptors in the brain. Specifically, it acts as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A and dopamine D2 receptors. This means that it prevents these neurotransmitters from binding to their respective receptors, helping to regulate mood and behaviour. Risperidone also has a high affinity for α1-adrenergic receptors and a lower affinity for histamine H1 and α2-adrenergic receptors. This means that it can bind to these receptors, influencing the neurotransmitters' effects that interact with them. Together, these actions help control symptoms of disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autism.
