Tolterodine belongs to the class of medicines known as antimuscarinics or antispasmodics.
It functions as a competitive muscarinic receptor antagonist. This means it binds to the muscarinic receptors found in the bladder's detrusor muscle, blocking a substance called acetylcholine. The blockage of acetylcholine leads to the relaxation of the detrusor muscle, which is the muscle responsible for bladder contraction during urination. This relaxation increases the capacity of the bladder and reduces its involuntary contractions. As a result, Tolterodine helps reduce sudden urges to urinate and episodes of urine leakage, also known as urge incontinence.

Tolterodine can be taken orally (immediate-release tablet and extended-release capsule).
Tolterodine is indicated for use in adults and elderly patients.
Tolterodine should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to tolterodine or to any of the other ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with urinary retention, gastric retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, and severe liver impairment.
Tolterodine may interact with anticholinergic medications (such as oxybutynin and solifenacin), antibiotics that inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes (such as erythromycin and clarithromycin), as well as antibiotics that induce CYP3A4 enzymes (like rifampin).
An overdose of tolterodine may lead to severe side effects like blurred vision, difficulty urinating, and fast heartbeat. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor immediately.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up doses to make up for the missed one.
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing Tolterodine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
For managing dry mouth, try sipping water frequently.
If you have constipation, increase your intake of fibre and fluids.

Patients with moderate to severe liver impairment or decreased kidney function should exercise caution when using tolterodine.
Individuals with a condition known as myasthenia gravis should also use this medication with caution.
It may help to avoid caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, and cola as they can aggravate your symptoms.
Aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day (unless the doctor advises otherwise).
