Dosage Forms Available

• Zuclopenthixol is available as a long-acting injectable depot formulation. This is administered by deep intramuscular injection.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Zuclopenthixol is intended for use in adults. The safety and efficacy of Zuclopenthixol in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established, thus it is not recommended for use in this age group.

Contraindications

• Zuclopenthixol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Zuclopenthixol or any of its components.
• It is also contraindicated in patients with circulatory collapse or central nervous system depression due to alcohol or other depressant medicines, and in patients with comatose states.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Zuclopenthixol can interact with other central nervous system depressants (such as diazepam), medicines that prolong the QT interval (like quinidine, amiodarone, sotalol), levodopa and dopamine agonists, lithium, anticonvulsants (like carbamazepine, phenytoin), and anticholinergic agents (such as atropine, hyoscyamine).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Zuclopenthixol is highly unlikely for this medication as a skilled healthcare professional administers it.
• If you forget to take your dose of Zuclopenthixol at the scheduled time, consult with your doctor for advice.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• For dry mouth, drinking plenty of water or chewing sugar-free gum may help.
• Constipation can be managed by eating high-fibre foods, drinking plenty of water, and exercising regularly.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Patients with cardiovascular disease, liver or kidney impairment, diabetes, seizures, or Parkinson's disease should exercise caution when taking Zuclopenthixol.
• Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with Zuclopenthixol are at an increased risk of death.

• Maintain a balanced diet. Poor nutrition can exacerbate some symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
• Regular physical exercise can help manage weight gain, a common side effect of antipsychotic medications.
• Avoid alcohol as it can increase the sedative effects of Zuclopenthixol.
• Practice good sleep hygiene. Lack of sleep can exacerbate the symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
• Smoking can decrease the effectiveness of antipsychotic medications. If you are a smoker, it's advisable to quit or reduce smoking.
