Monthly periods are regular and part of women’s lives. Good menstrual health is an indication of good health for a woman. Regularly removing endometrial cells lining the vagina is called the “Menstrual Cycle.” The menstrual cycle provides the body with essential hormones for a healthy life. And it also prepares the body for pregnancy each month.
The use of herbal plants and medicine, doing yoga and exercises and using apple cider vinegar, papaya leaf, and fruit in cases of dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, etc., have been proven natural and effective. Some quick home remedies are given below:
The following are eight natural home remedies for regular periods.
Foeniculum vulgare mill, of the Apiaceae family, also known in the common language as “fennel,” is used as a remedy for getting periods. Fennel plant seeds are used to treat irregular periods. The seeds are used by adding 4 grams to a cup of boiling water, letting it simmer for another 5 minutes on a low flame, and then turning off the heat. The tea or boiled fennel seed water has to be strained, and then honey is to be added. Mix well. This tea can be had twice a day for 3–4 days, just before the expected start date of periods.
Cinnamon is the bark of a tree. Cinnamon has a hot taste and an aromatic smell. To prepare, take 1 gram of cinnamon and boil it with water to make a decoction; after boiling, strain the contents and mix them with honey. This filtrate can be consumed three times a day.
Zingiber Officinale Roscoe, of the Zingiberaceae family, is commonly known as ginger or adrak in Hindi. Ginger can be consumed as a fresh root, tincture (an alcohol-based solvent mixture), or decoction. Based on the concentration of the substance, it can be used as a 2.5-3 mL tincture. It is to be used during menstruation, but low doses have to be taken during menstruation.
Cimicifuga racemosa of the Ranunculaceae family is commonly known as black cohosh. The black cohosh plant can be used as a tincture. A 1-2 ml tincture, taken two or three times a day, will help remove menstrual cramps.
Complementary therapy and alternative medicines are highly recommended to relieve menstrual discomforts. Yoga helps during irregular periods by decreasing ischemia and increasing vasodilation. Which in turn helps in the suppression of prostaglandins, the release of endogenous opiates, etc.
Yoga therapy or asanas for irregular periods include:
A study was carried out to determine the effect of karate on irregular periods. As per this research, it was found that exercise was effective in reducing distressing symptoms during irregular periods. The karate exercises included 15 minutes of running, 15 minutes of 100 punches and 100 kicks for 15 minutes, 10 minutes for katas, and 5 minutes of cool-down exercises and breathing techniques. The above recommendations are per the research study; however, consult your doctor before you take any form of exercise or yoga.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the primary cause of irregular periods. Vinegar, used in our kitchens, combines acetic acid and small amounts of minerals, vitamins, salts, and amino acids. In the case of PCOS, vinegar improves insulin sensitivity, helping to reduce PCOS.
Carica papaya, also known as “papaya”. The papaya leaf juice has been found to benefit irregular periods.
Conclusion
Menstrual periods are a part of women’s lives, and taking good care of menstrual health is vital for a good and healthy life. Home remedies can be used for a quick and immediate cure if any issues occur, like irregular periods. If the problem persists, see your doctor for assistance.

Avoid low-carb diets, as they may disrupt thyroid function and hormone levels. Aim for 225 to 325 grams of carbs daily. Include sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like salmon, walnuts, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, soybean oil, and flax oil. Around 5-10% of daily calories should come from PUFAs. Boost ovulation by ensuring adequate folate intake. Additionally, dark leafy greens, castor oil, chia seeds, and small amounts of dark chocolate may help normalise menstrual cycles.
There’s no natural guaranteed way to speed up your menstrual cycle. However, there are some natural approaches you can try. Regular yoga practice may help regulate periods by reducing pain, improving physical function, and lowering stress levels. Maintain a balanced diet with adequate carbs and fats. Consider foods rich in folate, like dark leafy greens. Engage in moderate exercise to support hormonal balance. Applying a warm compress or taking a warm bath can relax the pelvic muscles and increase blood flow, which might help in inducing a period. Manage stress through relaxation methods like meditation or deep breathing.Sex and orgasms can help bring on a period. Your doctor may prescribe combination oral contraceptive pills (COCPs) to regulate menstrual cycles and trigger periods. These pills contain synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone, which collaborate to imitate the natural hormonal changes in a woman’s body. But make sure to take such pills after consulting a doctor.
You can try oregano tea, cinnamon tea and marjoram tea. To make oregano tea, brew 1 tablespoon of oregano in a cup of boiling water. Drink it 2-3 times a day to help trigger menstruation. To make marjoram tea, Boil 20g of marjoram leaves in 1 liter of water. Consume up to 3 cups daily to regulate periods, especially effective for PCOS. To make cinnamon tea, boil a cinnamon stick in a cup of water for 5 minutes. This tea improves blood flow to the uterus and stimulates menstruation.
Your periods can be late due to weight changes, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or if you’re approaching menopause. It’s essential to consult a doctor to determine the underlying cause and seek appropriate treatment.
Foods like pineapple, dates, ginger, papaya and vitamin C-rich foods, as well as herbs like chamomile, parsley, cinnamon, rosemary, sage, and oregano, are known to help induce periods naturally. These foods may stimulate blood flow or influence hormonal activity.
