How Ampicillin + Sulbactam works

  • Ampicillin + Sulbactam is a combination of an antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor used to treat bacterial infections.

  • Ampicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic. It works by hampering the growth and division of bacterial cell walls. It binds to proteins essential for making peptidoglycan, a critical part of bacterial cell walls. This disruption causes the cells to burst, effectively killing the bacteria.

  • Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It safeguards ampicillin from being dissolved by certain bacterial enzymes known as beta-lactamases. These enzymes are produced by some bacteria as a defence mechanism to destroy antibiotics like ampicillin. Sulbactam, by blocking these enzymes, helps ampicillin remain effective against these otherwise resistant bacteria. Together, Ampicillin and Sulbactam combine to effectively manage a variety of bacterial infections.
