Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
It functions by blocking the formation of the bacterial cell wall. It does this by attaching itself to and making inactive the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). These proteins are found on the inner side of the bacterial cell wall. When these proteins are inactivated, they interfere` with the making of peptidoglycan, a key part of the bacterial cell wall. As a result, the bacterium's cell wall becomes weak and gets damaged, causing the bacterium to die. This is how Cefalexin manages a wide variety of bacterial infections.
