Cefditoren is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
It functions by inhibiting the building of bacterial cell walls. Specifically, it binds to and renders inactive penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). These proteins are found on the internal membrane of a bacterium's cell wall and are crucial for its integrity. By interfering with these PBPs, Cefditoren prevents the interlinking of peptidoglycan chains, which are necessary for the strength and rigidity of bacterial cell walls. As a result, the bacterial cell wall becomes weak, leading to the rupture and death of the cell, thereby effectively managing bacterial infections.
