Ciclopirox is primarily used to manage different types of fungal infections present on the skin, hair, and nails. It belongs to the class of antifungal medications.
Apart from its main usage, it is also used for managing conditions like athlete's foot (Tinea pedis), jock itch (Tinea cruris), ringworm of the body (Tinea corporis), cutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, and onychomycosis (fungal infection of fingernails and toenails). It can also be used as a part of comprehensive treatment for onychomycosis, which may include the removal of an infected nail.
Application site reactions (burning, itching, redness, irritation)
Skin rash or irritation
Nail discolouration, shape changes, or irritation
Hair discolouration (with Ciclopirox shampoo)
Ciclopirox is a synthetic antifungal agent from the hydroxypyridone class.
It functions by chelating, that is, grabbing onto and bonding with trivalent metal ions (like iron Fe3+ and aluminium Al3+). These metal ions are key for certain enzymes in fungal cells, which help break down toxic peroxides. With Ciclopirox in action, these enzymes are inhibited, causing an accumulation of toxic peroxides within the fungal cells. This leads to the death of these fungal cells. Additionally, Ciclopirox appears to interfere with the fungal cell's ability to transport substances across its membrane and maintain its membrane integrity. This adds to its antifungal effectiveness.
