Etoricoxib

ANALGESIC

Uses of Etoricoxib

  • Etoricoxib is used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute gouty arthritis.
  • It is an analgesic that helps reduce pain and swelling in the joints and muscles caused by these conditions.
  • Additionally, it can be used for short-term management of moderate pain following dental surgery.

Side effects of Etoricoxib

  • Common side effects of Etoricoxib include stomach pain, dry socket, leg swelling, dizziness, headaches, palpitations (rapid or pounding heartbeats), increased blood pressure, shortness of breath, constipation, gas, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), heartburn, diarrhea, and indigestion.
  • Other potential side effects may include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, sleep disturbances, skin rashes, and increased liver enzymes.
  • It may also cause fluid retention, leading to weight gain, or increased risk of infection and allergic reactions.

How Etoricoxib works

  • Etoricoxib functions as a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme integral to pain and inflammation processes. Belonging to the COX-2-selective (coxib) category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), it has undergone extensive clinical trials, establishing its analgesic and anti-inflammatory efficacy as at least comparable to, and in some cases surpassing, that of nonselective NSAIDs across various disease and patient treatment scenarios. Etoricoxib stands out for its enhanced gastrointestinal safety compared to nonselective NSAIDs, contributing to an overall favourable safety and tolerability profile. Its oral administration ensures rapid and complete absorption, leading to a swift onset of action.
