Framycetin

ANTIBIOTIC

Uses of Framycetin

  • Framycetin is commonly used to treat a wide range of bacterial skin infections, such as burns, scalds, wounds, ulcers, boils, and impetigo (a bacterial skin infection).
  • It is also effective in managing conditions like sycosis barbae, an inflammatory disorder affecting the skin around hair follicles, and paronychia, which causes inflammation around the nails.
  • Additionally, Framycetin is used to treat outer ear infections (otitis externa) and secondary bacterial infections that may arise from lice or scabies infestations, making it a versatile treatment option for various bacterial-related skin conditions.

Side effects of Framycetin

The side effects of Framycetin are:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Local allergic reaction

How Framycetin works

Framycetin is an antibiotic that belongs to the aminoglycoside class. Here’s how it works:

  • Framycetin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria. Ribosomes are the molecular machines in cells that make proteins.
  • By binding to the ribosomal subunit, Framycetin disrupts the process of translating genetic information into proteins. This interference prevents bacteria from producing essential proteins needed for their survival and multiplication.
  • The disruption in protein synthesis ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria. Framycetin is considered bactericidal because it kills bacteria rather than just inhibiting their growth.
