Itopride

ANTIEMETIC

Uses of Itopride

  • Itopride is used for treating gastrointestinal symptoms such as heartburn, vomiting, nausea, bloating (stomach feels swollen due to build-up of gas), non-ulcer dyspepsia.

Side effects of Itopride

  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache

How Itopride works

  • Itopride acts as a prokinetic agent. It increases the release of acetylcholine through dopamine D2-receptor antagonistic activity.
  • It also inhibits the breakdown of released acetylcholine by acting as an acetylcholine esterase (AChE) inhibitor. This dual action results in elevated levels of acetylcholine, promoting food movement, raising lower oesophagal sphincter pressure, stimulating gastric motility, accelerating gastric emptying, and enhancing gastro-duodenal coordination.
