Lactitol

Uses of Lactitol

  • Lactitol is primarily used for the management of chronic constipation. It belongs to a group of medications known as osmotic laxatives.

  • It is also used at higher doses for the management of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition that affects brain function due to liver disease.

Side effects of Lactitol

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • Diarrhoea

  • General discomfort in the stomach

How Lactitol works

  • Lactitol is a synthetic disaccharide sugar alcohol.

  • It works by acting as an osmotic laxative, which means it draws water into your bowel. This is because it is minimally absorbed in your small intestine, and gets broken down by bacteria in your colon into organic acids. This causes an increase in the water content and volume of your stool, making it softer and easier for you to pass.
