Dosage Forms Available

• Lubiprostone is available for use via oral route (gelatin capsules only).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medication is meant for adults above 18 years of age.

Contraindications

• Lubiprostone is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

• It is also contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to it in the past.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Lubiprostone may interact with opioid analgesics (such as methadone).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdose of Lubiprostone may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, abdominal discomfort, flushing, shortness of breath, hypotension, fainting, and chest tightness. If you observe any of these symptoms, inform your doctor and follow the advice accordingly.

• If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor. Here are some tips to manage common side effects.

• If you experience nausea, try taking this medication with food.

• Diarrhoea can be managed by staying hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

• If you are experiencing headaches or dizziness, rest and avoid strenuous activities until these symptoms subside.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Lubiprostone may cause dizziness or a feeling of lightheadedness. It is advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if such symptoms occur.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• It is always advisable to consult your doctor before using Lubiprostone during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with severe diarrhoea need to be cautious while using Lubiprostone, as it may worsen their condition.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• To manage chronic constipation, include more fibre-rich foods in your diet such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

• Regular physical activity can also help promote bowel movement.

• Avoid large meals and instead have smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.

• Limit consumption of processed foods, as they may contribute to constipation.
