Miglitol

Uses of Miglitol

  • Miglitol is primarily used for the management of blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the group of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.

  • In addition to its main use, it can also be used in combination with other antidiabetic medications like metformin or sulfonylureas to further improve glycemic control.

Side effects of Miglitol

  • Diarrhoea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)

How Miglitol works

  • Miglitol is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor.

  • It works by blocking enzymes in the small intestine that digest carbohydrates. These enzymes, known as alpha-glucosidases, usually break down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars like glucose which are then absorbed into the bloodstream.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Miglitol can be taken orally (tablet).

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • This medication is meant exclusively for adults aged 18 or over.

Contraindications

  • Miglitol is contraindicated in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to the medicine. It is also contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction, or chronic intestinal diseases with marked digestion or absorption disorders.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Miglitol may interact with intestinal adsorbents (such as charcoal), and digestive enzyme preparations containing carbohydrate-splitting enzymes (like amylase and pancreatin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of Miglitol will not result in hypoglycemia. However, if you suspect an overdose, it's essential to consult your doctor for advice and possible symptomatic treatment.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
