Dosage Forms Available

• Pilocarpine is available in multiple forms to be used as per the ailment it is managing (oral tablet), for managing certain types of eye conditions, Pilocarpine is available for application directly to the eye (eye drops and ophthalmic gel).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Pilocarpine is generally prescribed for adult usage.

Contraindications

• Pilocarpine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to it or any of its components. It should be avoided in patients with uncontrolled asthma or acute iritis. It should also not be used in patients with certain cardiovascular conditions, peptic ulcer disease, respiratory disorders, and renal or hepatic impairment.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Pilocarpine may interact with beta-blockers (such as atenolol, and propranolol).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Pilocarpine may result in sweating, nausea, increased urination, flushing, headache and other symptoms. If such symptoms are observed, contact your doctor immediately.
• If you miss a dose of Pilocarpine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help with dehydration caused by excessive sweating.
• Rest and lying down can ease dizziness.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Pilocarpine may cause blurred vision and dizziness, which may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The safety of Pilocarpine during pregnancy has not been well established. Always consult your doctor before using it during pregnancy. It is also not known whether Pilocarpine is excreted in human milk. Exercise caution when using this medicine while breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with asthma, cardiovascular diseases, peptic ulcer disease, acute iritis or narrow-angle glaucoma, or renal or hepatic impairment should exercise caution when using Pilocarpine.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Since Pilocarpine is used to manage dry mouth, drinking plenty of fluids can help maintain moisture in the mouth.
• Chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free hard candies can also stimulate saliva flow.
• Avoiding caffeine and alcohol, both of which can dry out the mouth, can be beneficial.
• Regular eye check-ups are advised for those using Pilocarpine for eye conditions.
• Regular dental check-ups are also recommended for those using Pilocarpine for dry mouth, as lack of saliva can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
