Pilomax Tablet is used to treat severe dry mouth (xerostomia) caused by salivary gland hypofunction, most commonly in patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. It is also highly effective for managing dry mouth symptoms associated with Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune disorder. By restoring moisture to the oral cavity, it significantly improves the patient's ability to speak, swallow, and taste food comfortably, while also reducing the risk of dental decay and mouth infections.
This medication contains Pilocarpine, a cholinergic agonist that acts on the parasympathetic nervous system. It works by stimulating specific receptors (muscarinic receptors) on the surface of the salivary glands, prompting them to produce and secrete a higher volume of natural saliva. This localized stimulation provides a functional solution to the ""parched"" feeling in the mouth and throat that often follows radiation damage to the glands.
The treatment should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually three to four times a day to maintain a consistent flow of saliva. It is often recommended to take the last dose of the day shortly before bedtime to help manage nighttime dryness. Consult your healthcare provider if you have a history of asthma, narrow-angle glaucoma, or severe heart disease, as this medication can affect other systems in the body.
