- Rifaximin is used to eradicate bacteria responsible for causing hepatic encephalopathy, a condition characterised by symptoms such as agitation, confusion, muscle problems, speech difficulties, and, in severe cases, coma.
- In adults with liver disease, it minimises the recurrence of overt hepatic encephalopathy episodes.
- It can be used either alone or, more commonly, in combination with medications that contain lactulose, a laxative.

How Rifaximin works
Rifaximin, a semi-synthetic derivative of rifampin, functions by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial RNA polymerase. This binding action disrupts a step in transcription, leading to the stoppage of bacterial protein synthesis and, consequently, impeding bacterial growth.
