Uses of Roxithromycin

  • Roxithromycin is used to treat various bacterial infections such as infections of the airways, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, infections in people who are resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics, other infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute otitis media, skin & soft tissue infections.

Side effects of Roxithromycin

  • Pain in the upper middle part of the stomach/abdomen

  • Dizziness 
  • Upset stomach 
  • Runny, loose motions (diarrhoea)
  • Rash

How Roxithromycin works

  • Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic.
  • It works by inhibiting protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth. It also prevents the translocation process of peptides, thereby arresting the growth and multiplication of disease-causing bacteria.

Dosage Forms Available

  • Roxithromycin can be taken orally (tablet and suspension).

Age And Dose Restrictions

  • It is intended to be used by adults and children above 6 years of age. 

Contraindications 

  • It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Roxithromycin. It is also contraindicated in patients who are allergic to macrolide type of antibiotics and in patients who have or have a family history of long QT syndrome. Medications used to treat acid reflux (cisapride), ergot alkaloid derivatives (ergotamine), medications to treat serious mental disorders (pimozide), and antihistamines (terfenadine) are contraindicated with Roxithromycin.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • Avoid taking medications for heart problems (quinidine), antidepressants (citalopram), medications to treat drug addiction (methadone), antipsychotic medications (phenothiazines), protease inhibitors (telaprevir), antifungals (ketoconazole), and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (moxifloxacin) with Roxithromycin. These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of Roxithromycin.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • Overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness. If the symptoms become severe, they need to be managed as an emergency in a hospital setting. Therefore, strict adherence to the prescribed dose is essential.
  • If you miss a dose of Roxithromycin, take it as soon as you remember. But, if the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing regime.

Management Of Side Effects

  • Take Roxithromycin with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and continue taking it as prescribed. If side effects worsen or persist, consult your doctor for a possible treatment plan adjustment.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • This medication may affect the mental or physical abilities required to operate machinery or drive.

Use In Pregnancy And Lactation

  • Caution should be taken in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

  • Caution is advised in older adults, patients having coronary heart disease, ventricular arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia), bradycardia, pseudomembranous colitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, arrhythmias, and myasthenia gravis.
