Uses of Simvastatin
The primary use of Simvastatin is for managing high cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. It belongs to a group of medicines known as statins.
Simvastatin is also used in the management of primary hyperlipidemia (heterozygous familial and nonfamilial) and mixed dyslipidemia, and is indicated for treating homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a severe inherited form of high cholesterol.

How Simvastatin works
Simvastatin is a member of the statin class of medications.
It works by inhibiting the action of a specific enzyme in the liver known as HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for producing cholesterol. By blocking this enzyme, Simvastatin effectively reduces the amount of cholesterol that the body produces. This results in a decrease in levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, and an increase in levels of HDL (good) cholesterol in the blood. Lowering these harmful types of fats in the blood helps manage risks of heart diseases and strokes, particularly in patients with high-risk factors such as type 2 diabetes or coronary heart disease.

Contraindications
Simvastatin is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes. It is also contraindicated in patients who have a known hypersensitivity to Simvastatin or any of its ingredients.
Other Medications to Avoid
Simvastatin may interact with antibiotics (such as erythromycin and clarithromycin), antifungals (like itraconazole and ketoconazole), calcium channel blockers (such as verapamil and diltiazem).
Overdose and Missed Dose
Overdose of Simvastatin can cause severe muscle pain and breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), liver damage, and kidney failure. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought.
In case a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped.
Management of Side Effects
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless, resolving upon discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of symptoms, please consult your doctor.
Drinking plenty of water may help manage some side effects like headache and nausea.
Taking the medicine with food can minimise gastrointestinal discomfort like abdominal pain or diarrhoea.

Simvastatin may cause dizziness or sleeplessness. As such, patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery after taking this medicine until they know how it affects them.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Simvastatin is not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation unless deemed necessary by a doctor. Always consult a doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Caution in Other Conditions
Patients with a history of liver or kidney disease should exercise caution when taking Simvastatin.
