Thyroxine Sodium works by controlling DNA transcription and protein synthesis. Triiodothyronine (T3) and L-thyroxine (T4) enter the cell nucleus and attach to thyroid receptor proteins linked to DNA. This complex activates gene transcription and the production of messenger RNA and cytoplasmic proteins. The main physiological effects of thyroid hormones are primarily generated by T3, with the majority (about 80%) formed from T4 through deiodination in peripheral tissues.
