HEPATOPROTECTIVE

Uses of Ursodeoxycholic Acid

  • Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), also known as ursodiol, is used to treat primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), dissolve small gallstones, and manage liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children. It has been used as a treatment for liver disease for over a century.

Side effects of Ursodeoxycholic Acid

  • Diarrhoea

How Ursodeoxycholic Acid works

  • Ursodeoxycholic Acid is a secondary bile acid with immunomodulant, cytoprotectant, and choleretic effects. It enhances the solubilisation of cholesterol in bile, reducing the formation and promoting the dissolution of gallstones. This mechanism is particularly relevant for small gallstones that may not be visible on X-ray.
  • It exhibits hepatoprotective properties, protecting the liver cells from damage. It is particularly beneficial in conditions like primary biliary cirrhosis, contributing to the overall health and function of the liver.
