Vigabatrin

Uses of Vigabatrin

  • The prime use of Vigabatrin is to manage conditions like infantile spasms (West syndrome) and refractory complex partial seizures. It belongs to the class of anti-epileptic medications.

  • In addition, Vigabatrin can also be used as an adjunctive treatment in adults and children aged between 2-16 years exhibiting complex partial seizures, especially when other medications have failed to control the condition.

Side effects of Vigabatrin

  • Drowsiness and sedation

  • Dizziness and headache

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Weight gain

How Vigabatrin works

  • Vigabatrin is an anti-epileptic medicine. It works by permanently stopping the function of an enzyme called GABA-transaminase. This enzyme usually breaks down a substance in the brain called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). By inhibiting the breakdown of GABA, Vigabatrin increases the amount of this neurotransmitter in the brain.
