Composition
Mucaine Gel is used to relieve acidity, heartburn, indigestion and the discomfort of gastritis, peptic ulcers, oesophagitis and hiatus hernia. It is also used for heartburn in pregnancy when advised by a doctor. It is a combination medicine containing aluminium hydroxide 291mg, magnesium hydroxide 98mg and oxetacaine 10mg per 5ml, and belongs to a class of medicines called antacids with a local anaesthetic.
This medicine works in two ways. Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide neutralise excess acid in the stomach, which relieves burning and discomfort. Oxetacaine is a local anaesthetic that numbs the lining of the stomach and food pipe, which helps relieve pain. Shake the bottle well before use and take it as directed by your doctor, and use it only for the duration advised.
Eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding spicy and oily food, and not lying down straight after eating can help reduce heartburn alongside this medicine. Avoid drinking or eating straight after a dose if your doctor has advised this, as it may reduce the effect.
Before use, tell your doctor about any kidney problems or other medical conditions, and about any other medicines you take, particularly other antacids. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if your symptoms persist, or if you notice persistent stomach pain or black stools.
