Whitfield's Ointment consists of two main active ingredients:

• Benzoic acid (6% w/w): Benzoic Acid has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi on the skin and acts as a preservative in the combination. It does so by creating an environment that is unfriendly to bacterial growth. This property of benzoic acid is particularly beneficial in cases where bacterial infections complicate skin conditions. Inhibiting bacterial proliferation supports overall healing and reduces the risk of secondary infections.
• Salicylic acid (3% w/w): Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent. It promotes the shedding of rough or dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. This exfoliating action helps to unclog pores, remove debris, and soften the skin. In conditions where skin buildup or scaling is problematic, such as fungal infections or eczema, salicylic acid's keratolytic action assists in restoring a healthier skin texture and reducing inflammation.
