Contraindications

• This medicine is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to either chloramphenicol or polymyxin B
• It is not suitable for those with viral or fungal eye infections or tuberculosis of the eye

Other Medications to Avoid

• Chloramphenicol + Polymyxin B can interact with liver-metabolized medicines (such as phenytoin and warfarin), thereby potentially increasing their levels and side effects
• Also, it may enhance neurotoxicity and ototoxicity when used with other neurotoxic medicines (like cisplatin) or ototoxic medicines (like gentamicin)

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Chloramphenicol + Polymyxin B is unlikely as it is intended for external use only. Using the prescribed dosage is recommended to avoid any side effects
• In case you happen to put a few extra drops of this medicine in your eye, do not panic. Rinse your eyes with clean water at room temperature. If any symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor
• If you forget to take a dose of this medication, apply it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next application. Do not take a double dose.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor

• For mild irritation or discomfort after application, a cool compress can be gently applied to closed eyes
• Drinking plenty of water can help alleviate minor systemic side effects that may occur if small amounts are absorbed systemically from eye or ear applications

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• The use of Chloramphenicol + Polymyxin B may cause temporary blurred vision due to its application as an eye ointment or drops. It is advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision is clear.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Chloramphenicol + Polymyxin B during pregnancy and lactation should be undertaken only after consultation with a doctor.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with existing liver or kidney disease should use Chloramphenicol + Polymyxin B with caution due to potential systemic absorption, especially on prolonged use.
• Patients who experience blood disorders should also use this medication with caution as the chloramphenicol component may exacerbate such conditions.

• Ensure personal hygiene to prevent the spread of infection; wash hands before and after applying eye or ear drops.
• Use separate towels and washcloths to avoid contaminating other areas or other people.
• Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface including fingers eyes or ears.
• Maintain adequate hydration especially if experiencing mild systemic symptoms post-application.
