Disodium Hydrogen Citrate

Urinary Alkaliser

Uses of Disodium Hydrogen Citrate

Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is used to make the urine less acidic, which helps treat and prevent conditions caused by excess acid in the urinary tract.

Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is commonly used for:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Reduces the burning and stinging sensation during urination by decreasing urine acidity.
  • Kidney stones (particularly uric acid stones): Raising urine pH helps prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones and may assist in dissolving existing uric acid stones.
  • Gout: Helps the kidneys remove excess uric acid from the body by increasing urine pH, which helps increase the solubility of uric acid in the urine.
  • Painful urination (dysuria): Provides relief from discomfort, burning, and pain during urination by alkalising the urine.
  • Metabolic acidosis: Used in certain cases to correct abnormal acid levels in the body.

Side effects of Disodium Hydrogen Citrate

The side effects of Disodium Hydrogen Citrate are:

  • Mood changes
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

How Disodium Hydrogen Citrate works

Disodium Hydrogen Citrate works as a urinary alkaliniser, meaning it reduces the acidity of urine by raising its pH level.

When taken orally, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and converted into bicarbonate by the body's normal metabolic processes. Bicarbonate is naturally alkaline, and as it is excreted through the kidneys, it raises the pH of the urine, making it less acidic.

A less acidic urine environment brings several benefits:

  • It helps dissolve uric acid crystals, reducing the risk of uric acid kidney stones and supporting the management of gout.
  • It reduces irritation of the bladder and urethra lining, relieving burning and discomfort during urination, particularly when urine acidity contributes to these symptoms.
  • It makes conditions less favourable for certain types of kidney stone formation, helping with long-term prevention.

The alkalising effect is temporary, so Disodium Hydrogen Citrate must be taken regularly as prescribed to maintain the desired urine pH.
