Divalproex is an anticonvulsant medicine.
It works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a brain chemical that sends signals to the nervous system. If you do not have enough GABA, your body may be in an excited state causing you to have seizures, panic attacks, or conditions like epilepsy. Additionally, Divalproex blocks certain channels (voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels) on nerve cells in the brain that enable these cells to 'fire' electrical signals. By doing this, it helps to reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Furthermore, it inhibits an enzyme called GABA transaminase and histone deacetylases (HDACs) which lead to changes in the expression of certain genes. Together, these actions help in stabilising overactive nerve cells, controlling seizures and regulating mood swings in mental conditions such as bipolar disorder.

An overdose of Divalproex can lead to severe drowsiness, heart disturbances, low body temperature, and heavy or laboured breathing. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required.
If a dose of Divalproex is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is near the time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Most side effects of Divalproex are temporary and generally resolve when discontinuing the medicine. However, if severe side effects are experienced or symptoms worsen, consult your doctor.

The medicine should also be used with caution in patients with mitochondrial disorders due to an increased risk of liver failure.
Regular checkups are recommended for patients who are taking Divalproex for a longer duration.
