Dosage Forms Available

• Eslicarbazepine can be taken orally (tablet).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medication is meant for adults and children above 6 years of age.

Contraindications

• Eslicarbazepine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this medication or other related medications such as carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. It is also contraindicated in patients with second or third-degree atrioventricular block.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Eslicarbazepine may interact with anatacids (omeprazole), blood thinners (clopidogrel) and other seizure medications (like carbamazepine, phenytoin, and lamotrigine).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Eslicarbazepine may cause severe dizziness, drowsiness, slurred speech, slowed breathing, loss of consciousness, and even seizures. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

• If you miss a dose of Eslicarbazepine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Never double up on doses to make up for a missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help manage some of the commonly reported side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.

• Taking medication with food can help in managing gastrointestinal side effects.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Eslicarbazepine may impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Avoid such tasks if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking this medication.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Eslicarbazepine during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only be if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the baby. It is advised to consult your doctor before using this medicine during these conditions.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with liver or kidney conditions should exercise caution when taking Eslicarbazepine. Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function tests may be required.

• Caution is also advised in patients with a history of cardiac conditions as Eslicarbazepine may lead to sodium levels imbalance, affecting the heart rhythm.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Stress management techniques like yoga, meditation or deep-breathing exercises can be beneficial.

• Avoid activities that might put you at risk if you have a seizure such as swimming alone or operating heavy machinery.
