Levosalbutamol

ANTIASTHMATIC

Uses of Levosalbutamol

  • Levosalbutamol is primarily used to treat the symptoms of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Levosalbutamol can be used before exercise to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, which is a narrowing of the airways during or after physical activity.
  • Levosalbutamol is used to provide quick relief from acute bronchospasm episodes in conditions such as asthma and COPD, helping to alleviate breathing difficulties.

Side effects of Levosalbutamol

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Nervousness
  • Bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchus)
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Pharyngitis
  • Rhinitis

How Levosalbutamol works

  • Levosalbutamol works by acting on the beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the airways.
  • Levosalbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors located in the bronchial smooth muscle. These receptors are part of the sympathetic nervous system.
  • When levosalbutamol binds to beta-2 receptors, it activates the enzyme adenylate cyclase. This enzyme converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).
  • The increase in cAMP levels leads to a series of intracellular events that result in the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle.
  • The relaxation of the smooth muscle around the airways causes the airways to widen (bronchodilation). This helps to alleviate symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest.

  • The inhalers can be used in children and adults above 4 years. The inhalation solution can be used in children and adults above 6 years.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • Avoid taking antihypertensives (atenolol, labetalol, and metoprolol), antidepressants (amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, isocarboxazid and phenelzine), antiarrhythmics (digoxin), adrenergic agonists (epinephrine), diuretics (furosemide), and other bronchodilators (metaproterenol) with Levosalbutamol. These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of Levosalbutamol.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • Overdose can cause hypertension, increased heart rate, hypokalemia, nervousness, headache, dry mouth, palpitation, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and sleeplessness. These symptoms need to be managed as an emergency in a hospital setting. Therefore, strict adherence to the prescribed dose is essential.
  • If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. But, if the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing regime.

Special Dietary And Lifestyle Recommendation

  • Learn the correct technique of using an inhalation solution and an inhaler to maximise the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Minimise exposure to allergens like dust mites, pet dander, pollen, or mold, which can trigger bronchospasm. Keep your living environment clean, and consider using air purifiers if necessary.
  • Avoid consuming chilled and refrigerated foods, which can act as a trigger for bronchospasm.
  • Avoid exposure to smoke, strong odours, and chemical fumes, as they can irritate the airways and trigger bronchospasm.
  • If you're a smoker, quit smoking to manage COPD.
