How Permethrin works
Permethrin is a pyrethroid, a class of antiparasitic agents.
It works by acting on the nervous system of parasites such as lice and mites. Specifically, Permethrin interferes with sodium channels in nerve cell membranes leading to extended depolarisation and paralysis of these organisms. The resulting paralysis causes the death of the lice, mites and their eggs. The selective toxicity of Permethrin is due to its greater effect on the nervous system of insects compared to mammals; it is over 2000 times more toxic to insects than humans due to its poor absorption through human skin and rapid metabolism.
