Sodium Bicarbonate

Antacid

Uses of Sodium Bicarbonate

  • Sodium Bicarbonate is used to correct metabolic acidosis, a condition characterised by an excess of acid in the blood.
  • It is administered to diminish acid levels in individuals post-myocardial infarction, particularly in those with conditions such as metabolic acidosis or hyperkalemia.
  • Additionally, it may be used in the management of patients who have taken excessive amounts of tricyclic antidepressant medication. Using sodium bicarbonate is reserved for situations where alternative resuscitative measures have been explored without success.

Side effects of Sodium Bicarbonate

  • Low blood sugar
  • Involuntary muscle contraction
  • Pain or irritation of the skin
  • Oedema
  • Muscle weakness

How Sodium Bicarbonate works

  • Sodium bicarbonate acts as an antacid through its alkaline properties. When ingested, it dissociates in the gastrointestinal tract, yielding bicarbonate ions. These bicarbonate ions subsequently neutralise excess gastric acid, raising the gastric contents' pH and relieving hyperacidity.
  • Additionally, sodium bicarbonate may stimulate the release of pancreatic enzymes, contributing to the buffering of acidic substances in the duodenum. The overall effect is reduced gastric acidity, mitigating symptoms associated with acid-related disorders.
