Spironolactone

Uses of Spironolactone

  • Spironolactone is mainly used to manage conditions like high blood pressure, heart failure, hyperaldosteronism and edema. It belongs to a category of medicines known as potassium-sparing diuretics.

  • In addition, it is utilized for the diagnosis and management of Conn's syndrome—an adrenal gland disorder causing hypertension and as a part of add-on therapy to help lower blood pressure.

How Spironolactone works

  • Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic.

  • It operates by inhibiting the effects of the hormone aldosterone, which typically regulates water and salt balance in our bodies. Normally, aldosterone acts on the kidneys to promote the absorption of sodium and water while enhancing the excretion of potassium.
