Sulphamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is a combination antibiotic.
Sulphamethoxazole belongs to the sulphonamide antibiotic class of medicine. It works by inhibiting bacteria from producing folate, a vital nutrient they need to grow and reproduce.
Trimethoprim is a folic acid antagonist that stops bacteria from producing a vital nutrient called tetrahydrofolic acid, which they need to grow and multiply. When combined with other medicines, it effectively disrupts two key steps in the bacteria’s nutrient production, enhancing the overall treatment.
