CompositionCalcigard 10 Capsule is used to prevent chest pain (angina), including angina caused by spasm of the heart arteries, and to treat Raynaud's phenomenon, in which fingers and toes turn white or blue in the cold. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing nifedipine 10mg in a standard (quick-acting) form, and belongs to a class of medicines called calcium channel blockers.
This medicine relaxes and widens the blood vessels, improving blood flow to the heart and the hands and feet. For long-term control of high blood pressure, doctors generally prefer long-acting (sustained-release) forms of nifedipine or other medicines. Swallow the capsule whole with water, as prescribed; do not bite, chew or place it under the tongue.
Not smoking, keeping warm in cold weather for Raynaud's, staying active within your limits and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol support heart and circulation health. Avoid grapefruit juice.
Do not take this medicine if you have had a heart attack in the last month, have unstable angina, cardiogenic shock or severe narrowing of the aortic heart valve, as it can worsen these conditions. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have heart failure, low blood pressure or liver disease, and about other medicines you take, especially other blood pressure medicines and certain antibiotics, antifungals and epilepsy medicines. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help straight away if chest pain gets worse, or you feel faint or have a fast, pounding heartbeat. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
