CompositionEffenac AB Tablet is used to ease breathing and clear thick mucus in long-term lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis. It is a combination medicine containing acebrophylline, a bronchodilator and mucus regulator, and acetylcysteine, a mucolytic.
This medicine is also used for bronchial asthma when thick, sticky mucus makes breathing harder. It helps relax the airways and thins mucus so it can be coughed up more easily. Take it after meals, as prescribed, and drink plenty of fluids through the day. It does not relieve a sudden attack, so keep your reliever inhaler with you.
Stopping smoking is the most important step for protecting your lungs. Avoiding dust and fumes, doing breathing exercises and keeping up with recommended vaccines also help.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have a stomach ulcer, heart disease or an irregular heartbeat, epilepsy, an overactive thyroid, or liver or kidney disease, and about other medicines you take. Avoid large amounts of tea, coffee and cola. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you have a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe stomach upset, or worsening breathlessness or wheezing. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
